Salt Lake homes

Remodeling an older Salt Lake home

Salt Lake City's homes have some history. The median home in the city was built in 1965, and about 65% were built before 1980, according to Census survey data1. In a house that age, what's behind the walls matters as much as the finishes, so it helps to know a few local rules first.

Lead safe work before 1978. Utah's Department of Environmental Quality says homes built before 1978 likely contain lead based paint, and it runs the state's lead program for paid contractors2. Firms paid to do work that disturbs paint in those homes must be certified, with certified renovators on the job3.

Permits. In Salt Lake City, taking out walls or changing plumbing, electrical or HVAC systems usually needs a permit, while painting and new flooring don't4. Other cities run their own building departments with their own lists. Millcreek, for one, doesn't require a permit for new cabinets and counters5. The remodeler pulls the permits your project needs.

Hard water. Salt Lake City's 2025 water quality report lists hardness from about 7 to over 28 grains per gallon, depending on the source6. That runs from hard to very hard on the USGS scale7, so ask about faucet, glass and fixture finishes that are easy to keep clean.

Why go through us

A simpler way to get a remodel estimate

Asking about a remodel shouldn't mean a week of calls from companies you've never heard of. Here's how this works instead.

One remodeler, not a list

Your request goes to one independent remodeler who serves your area. You deal with one person, get one written estimate and decide on your own time.

License checked

Before we pass a request, we check that the remodeler's Utah contractor license is active on the state's DOPL lookup. You can look it up yourself, too.

Free to you

You never pay us. Remodelers may pay us for the requests we pass them, and that's how this site is funded. The consultation and written estimate are free, with no obligation.

Common questions

Remodel questions homeowners ask

What does a kitchen or bathroom remodel cost in Salt Lake City?

It depends on how much you change. Salt Lake City averages from the 2025 Cost vs Value Report8 put a midrange minor kitchen remodel at $27,871, a midrange major kitchen remodel at $79,909 and a midrange bathroom remodel at $27,526.

Treat those as planning figures, not quotes. Try the estimator above or read the Salt Lake remodel cost guide, then get your real number from the remodeler's written estimate after an in home visit.

Is this service really free?

Yes. You never pay Salt Lake Kitchen Remodel anything, and the remodeler's in home consultation and written estimate are free. Remodelers may pay us for the requests we pass them, and that's how the site is funded.

You're under no obligation to hire the remodeler. If you do, your price, schedule and terms come from your written contract with them, not from us. Here's how it works.

Who is the remodeler, and how do I know they're licensed?

Each request goes to one independent remodeler who serves your area. They run their own business, give their own estimate and sign their own contract with you. Before we pass a request, we check that their Utah contractor license is active on the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) Licensee Lookup9.

You can search the same lookup yourself. Utah requires contractors to put their license number on contracts and bids10, so look for it on the written estimate.

How long does a kitchen or bathroom remodel take?

Planning usually takes longer than the work. Houzz users report spending about 9.5 months planning a kitchen and 5.8 months on construction11. Fixr puts the work on a full kitchen remodel at 6 to 12 weeks12 and most bathroom projects at 2 to 12 weeks13. Custom cabinets alone can take 3 to 6 months or more to arrive12.

Ask the remodeler for a schedule along with your written estimate.
