Refresh or full remodel?

A refresh keeps the layout and the cabinet boxes and changes the surfaces: new or refaced doors, new counters, a backsplash, a new sink and faucet. A full remodel replaces the cabinets and appliances, and sometimes moves walls, plumbing or the island.

The 2025 Cost vs Value Report shows how far apart those can be in Salt Lake City1. Its minor kitchen remodel keeps the cabinet boxes and adds new shaker style fronts, new counters, a new range and refrigerator, flooring and paint2.

Salt Lake City averages, 2025 Cost vs Value Report
ProjectAverage costValue recouped at resale
Minor kitchen remodel, midrange$27,871109.8%
Major kitchen remodel, midrange$79,90950.8%
Major kitchen remodel, upscale$161,00938.7%
Bathroom remodel, midrange$27,52658.6%
Bathroom remodel, upscale$85,43345.4%

If resale is the main goal, the refresh has the stronger payback in this data. If you're staying for years and the layout fights you every day, a full remodel may be worth it. Permits change too: painting and new flooring don't need one in Salt Lake City, but taking out walls or changing plumbing or electrical systems usually does3.

Kitchen, bath or both at once?

Doing both at once means one planning stretch and one period of living with work in the house. Doing them one after the other spreads out the cost and the disruption.

Either way, give yourself time. Houzz users report spending about 9.5 months planning a kitchen and 8.4 months planning a primary bath4. Leave room in the budget too: 37% of homeowners who renovated in 2025 went over budget, most often because products or services cost more than expected4.

If you're thinking about both, pick Kitchen and bathroom on the form so the remodeler knows to look at both rooms.
