Why cabinets steer the budget

Cabinets and hardware take 29% of a typical kitchen budget in the National Kitchen & Bath Association's guide, the largest single share1. Most people replace them: in the 2026 Houzz study, 68% of renovating homeowners replaced all their cabinets, 27% upgraded some and 5% left them alone2.

So the first question is whether your cabinet boxes are worth keeping. If they're solid and the layout works for you, painting or refacing can stretch the budget a long way.

Paint, reface or replace

These are national figures from Fixr, not Salt Lake quotes, though Salt Lake kitchen pricing runs close to the national average3.

Cabinet options, national figures
OptionWhat changesTypical national cost
PaintSame boxes and doors, new finish$2,500 to $6,500 for most kitchens4
RefaceSame boxes, new doors and drawer fronts$3,000 to $13,500 for most kitchens5
New stockNew boxes in set sizes and finishes$100 to $300 per linear foot6
New semi customNew boxes with more sizes and finishes$150 to $650 per linear foot6
New customBuilt to fit your kitchen$500 to $1,200 per linear foot6

For scale, the Cost vs Value kitchens have 30 linear feet of cabinets7. At those rates, that's about $3,000 to $9,000 for stock, $4,500 to $19,500 for semi custom and $15,000 to $36,000 for custom6. Fixr says labor makes up 30% to 50% of the cabinet total, so ask whether a price includes installation6.

What to ask about any cabinet line

Shaker is the leading door style at 58%, and custom is the most chosen grade at 46%, ahead of semi custom at 33% and stock at 10%2. Whatever the label says, look at how the cabinet is built. At the visit, ask:

  • The box. What are the sides, back and bottom made of, and how thick are they?
  • Drawers. How are the drawer boxes joined, what slides do they ride on, and do they open all the way?
  • Doors and hinges. Are the hinges adjustable, and do doors and drawers close softly?
  • Finish. Is it painted or stained, applied at the factory or on site, and what does the maker's warranty cover?

Ask to see a sample door and drawer, and open and close them a few times.

Lead times shape the schedule

Cabinet orders often set the pace of a kitchen remodel. Fixr puts stock cabinets at 1 to 2 weeks, semi custom at 4 to 8 weeks, and fully custom at 3 to 6 months or longer8. Countertops come after the cabinets are in, adding 2 days to a week8.

If timing matters, ask the remodeler what changes if you choose semi custom instead of custom, and when your order would be placed.

When new cabinets mean a full remodel

Replacing every cabinet usually brings new counters with it. Add new appliances and you're at what Houzz calls a major remodel, with a national median of $55,0002. Changing or lowering cabinets can also raise plumbing and electrical questions, which is why some permit offices treat it as more than finish work9. See kitchen remodeling for the full picture.

Permits, licenses and older paint

Permit rules differ by city. Millcreek lists cabinets and countertops as finish work that doesn't need a permit10. Salt Lake City exempts painting, flooring and other cosmetic work, but altering plumbing or electrical needs a permit11. In unincorporated areas served by the Greater Salt Lake MSD, changing or lowering cabinets needs a permit9.

Utah's S220 Carpentry and Flooring license class covers cabinets and countertops12, and you can check any license on DOPL's online lookup13. Painting or refacing in an older home? Homes built before 1978 likely contain lead based paint14, and paid firms that disturb it must be certified15.

Kitchen cabinets FAQ

Questions about kitchen cabinets

Is refacing cheaper than new cabinets?

Often, but not always. Fixr's national average for refacing is about $275 per linear foot, with most kitchens between $3,000 and $13,5005. New stock cabinets run $100 to $300 per linear foot and semi custom $150 to $6506, so refacing can cost as much as basic new cabinets.

Refacing makes the most sense when the boxes are sound and you like the layout, since both stay.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

Fixr puts professional cabinet painting at $2,500 to $6,500 for most kitchens, about $4,000 on average, or $30 to $70 per linear foot4. Those are national figures.

In a home built before 1978, sanding old finishes can disturb lead paint, and paid firms doing that work must be certified15.

How long do new cabinets take to arrive?

Fixr puts stock cabinets at 1 to 2 weeks, semi custom at 4 to 8 weeks and custom at 3 to 6 months or longer8. Countertops follow once the cabinets are in. Ask the remodeler to put the expected order and delivery timing in writing with your estimate.

Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets?

It depends on your city and on whether plumbing or electrical changes. Millcreek exempts cabinets and countertops10. The Greater Salt Lake MSD, which covers unincorporated areas, requires a permit to change or lower cabinets and countertops9. In Salt Lake City, plumbing or electrical changes need one11. The remodeler pulls any permits the job needs.

What cabinet style do most people choose?

Shaker, by a wide margin. In the 2026 Houzz study, 58% of renovating homeowners picked it, ahead of flat panel at 22% and raised panel at 12%2.

Popular isn't the same as right for your house, so bring photos of kitchens you like to the visit.

Who can install cabinets in Utah?

Cabinets and countertops fall under Utah's S220 license class12. Without a license, a handyman can only take jobs under $7,000 in total, and any plumbing or electrical work still needs a licensed contractor16. Check any license on DOPL's online lookup before you sign13.
